Context & Constraints

HealthGuard started as a business collaboration between Garmin and Toyota, with a clear goal: add a health layer to Drive+ Link, Toyota's connected vehicle platform embedded in 200K+ vehicles across Taiwan.

But we hit technical constraints before we started.

Real-time health API access was outside the client's budget, which meant displaying information such as live heart rate was off the table. To work around this, we shifted direction to build something that could benefit a driver in the car, using data that remained meaningful even with only periodic sync and manual refresh.
