A study with Taiwanese commercial truck drivers, exploring future IVI features for a Japanese commercial truck OEM. It turned 165 survey responses and 9 in-person interviews into 6 design opportunities, framed around two business costs: damaged cargo and traffic fines.

My Role

I ran this study end to end: structuring the objectives and interview framework, screening participants, orienting observers, facilitating sessions, synthesizing across data sources, and developing the concepts.

Problem & Context

Garmin builds truck devices for a range of driving scenarios, but mostly for drivers in the US. This study was run to understand what Taiwanese truck drivers need, and to design features around those pain points.

Truck driving carries constraints that don't appear in passenger car IVI: cargo weight, height clearance, weigh stations, restricted roads, multi-stop delivery windows. The study set out to uncover the underlying needs and goals from the truck drivers' perspective.
